Overcoming Obstacles toward self-sufficiency

Financial Literacy

Adhering to a budget, decreasing debt, increasing savings, and understanding credit are vital to sustaining housing. This is the core of our Financial Literacy program.

How We Help:

  • Free tax preparation for the low-to-moderate income population (known as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance - VITA). More on this below.
  • Pairing trained volunteer Financial Coaches with individuals emerging from homelessness. More on this below.
  • Financial Education Outreach.

Why is Financial Literacy important?

Financial "literacy" and connecting with financial resources are frequently underlying issues among so many low-to-moderate income individuals and families who are struggling to find and keep housing.

The benefits:

  • Enables financial stability.
  • Builds assets.
  • Builds communities.
  • Helps our low-to-moderate income workforce file their taxes appropriately.
  • Identifies "Earned Income Tax Credits," which result in refunds that can be used toward housing, medical costs, and other general household items.
  • Connects individuals to other mainstream resources that might further help their financial situation.

More on the free tax program

Each tax season (January - April), more than 200 trained volunteers at various community locations help our low-to-moderate income workforce and our seniors prepare and e-file their taxes.
